The Art of Yakisugi. Our design is a tribute to the ancient Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban, where cedar is charred to become weather-resistant. We were captivated by the paradox of using fire to protect wood. The inspiration comes from the deep, crocodile-skin texture formed by intense heat, representing a beauty born from resilience and transformation. It captures the history of the flame in a static, durable form, turning a destructive force into a protective shield.
Texture
The texture exhibits the rugged, scale-like surface characteristic of heavily charred timber. It is defined by a network of deep, irregular fissures and raised rectangular platelets, often referred to as the "alligator skin" effect. This high-relief topography creates a constant interplay of micro-shadows within the blackness, giving the material a raw, powerful presence that feels ancient and substantial to the touch.
Application
This material is a favorite for modern architectural facades, particularly for private villas and cultural buildings situated in nature. The deep black finish allows the structure to recede visually, creating a striking silhouette that contrasts beautifully with green landscapes or snowy environments. It gives buildings a timeless, weathered appearance that feels grounded and permanent, making it an excellent choice for exterior cladding that requires both durability and strong design character.
